The capital of Slovakia is only a few hours drive from Budapest, so it is easy to travel to Bratislava and back to Budapest again in one day (and enjoy a good program in Bratislava). The Hungarians name Bratislava “Pozsony” so pay closely attention not to get lost looking for Bratislava along the road (where all you can find written is “Pozsony”.)
Bratislava is not a very big city; the population does not even reach 1/2 million people. It is located at the bank of the Danube, just as Prague and Budapest, and several cruise boats stop in Bratislava. With Vienna Bratislava are the two capitals located closest to one another in all of Europe (less than 60 kilometres).
Bratislava is the center of politics and culture in Slovakia, and more and more famous artists visit Bratislava on their world tours (though many hotshots still skip the capital of Slovakia).
Bratislava is the cultural heart of Slovakia, owing to the cities historical multi-cultural character, local culture is influenced by different ethnic groups; Germans, Slovaks, Hungarians, and Jews. Bratislava enjoys numerous museums, galleries, theaters, concert halls, cinemas, film clubs, and foreign cultural institutions.
It is worth notizing that Beethoven, Mozart, Liszt and Haydn all visited Bratislava during their lifetime.
